The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) consist of 17 key commitments that strive to eradicate poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all by 2030.

The cereal harvest at the end of the dry season is work that is almost exclusively reserved to women, who even when they are working in the fields, wear the traditional orhni, a long brightly colored shawl, specific to the region.

According to the United Nations:
- Full participation of women in the work force would add percentage points to a country’s growth rate, double digits in many cases.
- Investing in education programs for girls and increasing the age at which they marry brings back US $5 for every US $ 1 spent.
