The United Nations Sustainable Goal 12:

Ensure sustainable consumption and production.

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) consist of 17 key commitments that strive to eradicate poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all by 2030.

Yann Arthus Bertrand has chosen this photo to represent the challenges of meeting the United Nations SDG 12.

Crushed and then stacked, these automobiles are awaiting possible repurposing. Before arriving in the junkyard, car demolishers took the cars apart, depolluted them and removed the useable parts for sale on the spare parts market or for recycling. The last link in the automobile industry and the first in the recycling chain, these demolishers play an essential role in the car market waste treatment. Since 2015, a European directive requires automobile manufacturers to recycle 95 % of vehicle weight and is a first step toward a sustainable and responsible management of the car industry.

According to the United Nations:

  • More people around the world will join the middle class over the next 20 years, improving individual prosperity.

  • However, this means increased demand for limited natural resources and pressure on the environment.
