The United Nations Sustainable Goal 4:

Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) consist of 17 key commitments that strive to eradicate poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all by 2030.

Yann Arthus Bertrand has chosen this photo to represent the challenges of meeting the United Nations SDG 4.

These young girls are attending school in the Somalian refuge Hagadera camp.  The camp has seven primary schools and two secondary school, a professional training school, a literacy center for adults as well as a training center for information and communication technologies.  Class size ranges from 100 to 120 students although school attendance rates for children, the majority of the refugee population, is only 37 % for primary school and 14.8 % for secondary. Education will allow these students to build a better future outside the camp, where jobs are almost non-existent.

According to the United Nations:

  • 91% of children in developing countries are not enrolled in primary education.

  • However, 57 million primary age children still do not attend school.

BNP Paribas:

BNP Paribas fully contributes to achieving all 17 SDGs through a large range of actions and initiatives.

Our commitment to achieving SDG 4:

BNP Paribas is involved in this SDG through 3 drivers of action:

◆ Professional development for employees;

◆ Education and professional integration through its Foundation;

◆ Financial education for the general public.

Support for Educational Programmes:

Odyssée Jeunes is an educational programme that provides support for the most disadvantaged young people. This initiative gathers together the BNP Paribas Foundation, the Seine-Saint-Denis local authority and the French Ministry of National Education. In total, over 40,000 young people have benefited from this initiative since 2009, thanks to a yearly budget of €1 million.

In Belgium, universal access to Flemish or French language education is not yet a reality and young people of foreign origin or from disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds often suffer from failure at school. The BNP Paribas Fortis Foundation supports tutoring programmes of 6 universities, helping 150 students every year to benefit from remedial classes provided by student volunteers.
