The United Nations Sustainable Goal 7:

Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all.

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) consist of 17 key commitments that strive to eradicate poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all by 2030.

Yann Arthus Bertrand has chosen this photo to represent the challenges of meeting the United Nations SDG 7.

Sunny 320 days a year, the large plains around Seville are an ideal place for a solar power plant. This 11-megawatt plant, the largest in a complex of 8, has been in operation since 2006. When there is sun, these solar power plants can provide energy equal to a fossil fuel power plant.   The power-generating potential for this energy source is considerable: the earth’s surface receives in one hour as much solar energy as the energy we consume in one year. Spain’s goal is to produce 100 % of its electricity needs with renewable sources by 2050.

According to the United Nations:

  • From 2000 to 2016, the proportion of the global population with access to electricity increased from 78% to 87%

  • Energy is the most important contributor to climate change.
