THE WEALTH STORY OF SOPHIE DE LA CHAPELLE

Hello my name is Sophie de La Chapelle. I am Global Head of Strategic Asset Allocation at BNP Paribas Wealth Management. My team of Strategic Asset Allocation experts advises Ultra High Net Worth clients by assessing their over/rall asset allocation for the long term, in a pedagogical and personalised way.

I would like to tell a story that illustrates BNP Paribas Wealth Management’s ability to mobilise relevant expertise to fully meet our clients’ expectations.

This story is about a French prospect, whom I will refer to as Mrs Marshal for anonymity reasons.

Two years after receiving a sizeable inheritance, she was seeking a “good” financial partner.

Mrs Marshal was very risk averse and not familiar with financial concepts. Prior to our appointment, Mrs Marshal had already met with other financial institutions and had received offers from other experts. She was keen to understand these offers and did not want to make any investment decisions without first mastering all the ins and outs.

How did you advise Mrs Marshal?

Our advice was given in three phases.

First, we carried out an analysis of Mrs Marshal’s overall wealth, including her listed and unlisted assets, based on information that she had given us. This is a different approach to the one generally taken by our competitors that only focuses on listed assets. Mrs Marshal found it particularly helpful, because it was the first time that she had visualised, in a simple way, the modelling of various asset allocation scenarios, associated with performance and risk indicators. So our analysis was relevant because it clearly showed the main characteristics of each asset class, their impact within an allocation and our long-term strategy for each asset class.

Second, we presented our analysis to Mrs Marshal and her advisers, during a round-table style meeting that was also attended by some of our competitors. During this time, she had the opportunity to ask all her questions.

Because our approach was clear, personalised, and easy to understand, Mrs Marshal was able to familiarise herself with the return and risk mechanisms used to build an asset allocation. More specifically, she was able to gain a better understanding of how to combine asset classes in an optimal way to maximize the return for a given level of risk.

At the end of the day, Mrs Marshal and her advisers were impressed with the relevance and depth of our analysis, and consequently decided to entrust us with the allocation and management of 50 million euros.  Moreover, they wanted to meet other experts from BNP Paribas Wealth Management.

What lessons did you learn?

First, to step back to understand the client’s overall wealth before discussing financial products.

Second, to focus on the client’s goals, his or her overall wealth, risk appetite, and the construction of the asset allocation.

Lastly, to adapt to the client’s level of financial knowledge.

These ingredients are the DNA of our tailor-made strategic asset allocation analysis, and they enabled us to advise this lady in a very relevant way!

In the case that I have just presented, we distinguished ourselves from the competition through our accessible wealth analysis approach, focused on the client's needs and goals.

Our approach was a fantastic tool for discussion, comprehension, reflection, and decision-making. Mrs Marshal was so delighted with our service that she decided to become a client!

My whole team of Strategic Asset Allocation experts, based in Europe and Asia, would love to help you build your tailor-made asset allocation.

Please feel free to get in touch through our website, or if you are a client, via your relationship manager.

Goodbye. See you soon.
